HWMC thanked for donation to BHS Marching Band

With the annual HWMC auction next week, the BIB took the opportunity to thank the organization for its $5,000 donation to the BHS Marching Band for two sousaphones.

At its meeting earlier this month, the Berkley Instrumental Boosters (BIB) thanked the Huntington Woods Men’s Club (HWMC) and its current president, Scott Kube, for the club’s $5,000 contribution for two sousaphones to the 2012-13 BHS Marching Band. The BIB provided a photo plaque, which will be permanently placed in the high school band room.

Kube acknowledged the band’s participation in the 4th of July and Halloween parades, and that many students living in the city of Huntington Woods are in the band and orchestra programs.

When BHS band director Alan Posner and BIB president Gordy Oliva initially requested funds from the HWMC, they noted that nearly 40 percent of students in Marching Band, and almost 50 percent of students in the Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble went to Burton Elementary School.

“That was when the band was at 75 students, this year there were 106 students in the Marching Band, the highest ever,” says Oliva. “The sousaphones were essential for a strong bass section, and we were very thankful for the Men’s Club donation.”

This month’s presentation coincided with the HWMC busiest event of the year, the annual Men’s Club Auction on Saturday, March 23.

This year, the BIB donated several items to the auction including a “Wake-Up” call from the Marching Band, a chance to lead the band in the fight song at a game or concert, priority seating and parking at BHS band or orchestra concerts, and several gift cards.

“The high school drumline and chamber orchestra will also have short appearances at the auction,” says Oliva. “It’s our way of giving back for an extremely worthwhile cause and a chance for those without children in the schools to see how much talent there is.”
