BHS Marching Band students initiate fundraising efforts

Thanks to the generous residents of Huntington Woods, the Berkley High School Marching Band drumline was able to raise nearly $1,000 in its annual bottle drive earlier this month. The student-initiated project, spearheaded by drumline co-section leaders Patrick Schahfer and Jack Krueger, raised funds for drumheads, which are replaced on average every year, according to BHS Director of Bands Alan Posner.

Last year, students, parents, faculty, businesses and the community made it possible for the Marching Band to purchase new drumline instruments for the first time in more than 15 years.

In another student-led project, drum major Allie Archambault wrote a request and received funding from the Huntington Woods Women’s League for a new conducting podium.

“It’s great to see students taking ownership when they see a need,” says Posner. “It shows their level of dedication and commitment to a common goal.”

For the 2013-2014 school year, the BHS Marching Band is 122 members, topping last year’s record-breaking number of students. For the first time in at least five years, a color guard will also perform. The drumline, color guard and drum majors have been practicing since winter to prepare for next season.
