Berkley High Marching Band Camp starts Monday with new teaching assistant on board, ends August 16 with Olga’s Fundraiser

Ready for your wake-up call, Berkley?

Beginning Monday, August 5, drumline, color guard and new Berkley High School Marching Band marchers will be reporting for duty at Berkley High School. This pre-camp week readies the leadership and a core group of students for the week of August 12-16, when the band will rehearse from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m at Hurley Field.

This year, the 120-plus band (up from 77 students two years ago) will feature a color guard and musical selections that are close to the heart of all Detroiters. This year’s show is MOTOWN!

Band Director Alan Posner is also pleased to announce that joining him will be Eric Ambrose, who has been hired as a part-time teaching assistant. In addition to assisting with marching band duties, Ambrose will work with the high school jazz lab band, concert band and substitute at the elementary and middle schools as needed.

“I’m absolutely thrilled that our administration saw the need for this position and filled it.  I’m even more thrilled that the position will be filled by Eric Ambrose.  Eric is incredible teacher and musician who will be able to help take our program to new heights,” says Posner.

Ambrose completed his Bachelor’s in Music Education and Secondary German Education from Central Michigan University in 2008, and is currently working on his Master of Education in Instructional Technology at Wayne State University. Prior to his appointment in Berkley, Ambrose was the director of bands in the Climax-Scotts Community Schools in Climax, Michigan. He has worked with students 6-12 and is also a private bassoon instructor.

Ambrose is the son of Robert Ambrose, the long time band director at Andover High School (now Bloomfield Hills High School), and hails from a family of musicians including his aunt, Nancy, professor of oboe at the University of Michigan. He was selected out of 26 highly qualified applicants.

Residents are welcome to attend the Marching Band performance on the final day of band camp on Friday, August 16. It will begin at 11:30 on Hurley Field. A fundraiser at Olga’s Restaurant on 12 Mile and Southfield is also planned for Friday, August 16. Flyers will be available during band camp, or visit www.olgas.com and click Fundraiser to print out a flyer. This is for the Lathrup Village location only.
