Pollution & How We Can Stop It

A 9-year-old environmental activist introduces himself and discusses what he sees as the key issues in protecting the Earth and living responsibly.

Hello, everyone.  Let me introduce myself.  My name is Asher Schreiber, I am 9 years old, I play the piano, I am Jewish, and I have one brother, one sister, and one step-sister. I am 4’1” tall, and I am interested in mystery and realistic fiction chapter books.  The next few paragraphs will be about how we, and other people, can make our planet a healthier place to live.

The 5 R’s: Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Restore, and Respect

“You are blind as a bat.”  Bats are not blind. Rather like the saying “Our world is good and safe.”  The Earth is not very safe, in many senses.  Part of this is because many people do not reuse, reduce, recycle, restore, or respect in any way.

Reduce, Re-use, & Recycle

Whenever you see something on the ground, pick it up. If it’s not safe to pick up, return to the scene later on with rubber gloves, or something of the sort. If it stays there, it will most likely stay there and rot and rot and rot, polluting the Earth all the while.  If we recycle it so that it won’t pollute the Earth, or re-use it if we can, then we reduce the risk of our Earth getting filled up with garbage because so many people don’t re-use, reduce and recycle.

Restore & Respect

One of what I think are the main reasons that there are so many litterbugs on the planet (no disrespect intended) is because people don’t restore what they have broken down or destroyed and have no respect for the Earth.  Here is how it would be in a mathematical term.  No one respects the Earth + no one restores what they have built on = an unhappy planet.  If we don’t restore and respect the Earth today, who knows what state it will be in tomorrow?

About Me

It affects my life because if grown-ups are polluting today, then all of us kids won’t have a better planet. We’ll have worse.

The first words that were used in the Constitution of the United States, “We the people…” were used for the beginning of a new country. Now, our country is known to be the single biggest polluter in the world. But, if we the people of the United States make our country a better place, then who knows how much the world will have improved by then?
