Berkley enjoys music, hot dogs and fun Thursday during the year's first concert in the series.

At the end of a day spotted with rain showers, the sky cleared, the humidity lifted and Berkley families gathered for the first concert in the Robina Rhapsody series.

Summer Days in Berkley was the theme for the first of four free concerts planned for the summer, and bubbles, Hula-Hoops and sidewalk chalk added to the fun.

While the Aaron Vaughn Band played classic covers of favorite tunes, kids and adults grooved to the beat on Robina just north of Twelve Mile Road.

The Thursday evening concert series, which is put on by the Berkley Junior Women's Club, is designed to appeal to children, adults and seniors, said BJWC member and event coordinator Denise Brainard.

“I think the nice thing about Berkley is that the community really does come together and attend these events,” she said. “These neighborhood events are so important to our community.”

Forty-three-year Berkley resident Josephine Brewer agreed.

“I’m on the Berkley Parks and Rec advisory board and we know that these events really bring the community together,” said Brewer, 74. “What a wonderful community we have.”

Johnny Hanna, 47, said he was especially happy to see a crowd gather on Robina to enjoy themselves and take notice of his new shop, Berkley Shoe Repair.

“This is great for me,” Hanna said. “Everyone drives down Twelve Mile, but they don’t see the stores on Robina. Now people will see the store and know we are here.”

Hanna was also the first customer to enjoy a hot dog from the Motor City Franks cart.

“This is our very first event, and we are pretty excited,” said Lisa Georgeff, 49, who operates the food cart with her husband Robert, 50, and their children Andrew, 10, and Nina, 7. Hungry customers kept the family busy by buying dogs, chips and pop. Lisa Georgeff said she looks forward to working the remaining three Robina Rhapsody events, as well as other summer gatherings.

Throughout the evening, the crowd swelled to include families, couples, shoppers visiting , and those grabbing a quick dinner from . Many stopped to enjoy a song or two and chat with friends.

Missed the first Robina Rhapsody? Don’t worry. The summer is just beginning. Plan to attend the three remaining events:

  • July 21: Beach Bash
  • Aug. 18: '50s and '60s, Cruisin' in Berkley
  • Sept. 15: FestiFall
