Michigan’s Meryl Davis and Charlie White, gold medalists in ice dancing at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, have their sights set on a mirrorball trophy as celebrity headliners in ABC’s 18th season of “Dancing with the Stars.”
The cast for the season beginning at 8 p.m. March 17 was announced Tuesday, ABC News reports. Locally, the show airs on WXYZ-TV (Channel 7).
The ice-skating duo, who grew up miles apart in southeast Michigan, won the gold medal in ice dancing and the bronze as part of the Team USA figure skating team in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games. Davis, 27, grew up in West Bloomfield and White, 26, in Bloomfield Hills and have been skating together since 1977. They trained at the ice arena in Canton
They won’t be paired on the show and are expected to be fiercely competitive.
"I think we're excited for a little healthy competition," Davis said Tuesday on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” adding that the trash talk between the two is "brewing."
White said new moves will be require when he trades his skates for dancing shoes. And he will tackle some new steps – the Tango, for example.
“The way you move is completely different,” he said.
Other celebrities announced Tuesday include Candace Cameron Bure, NeNe Leakes, Cody Simpson and James Maslow. Others are: Danica McKellar, Diana Nyad, Drew Carey, Amy Purdy, Sean Avery and Billy Dee Williams. See all of the pro pairings.
