Film Crew Shoots Scenes in Huntington Woods

"Cripple" is a comedy about a local man who loses the use of his limbs in a diving accident and has to relearn how to live.

Huntington Woods caught the movie bug Friday night as the cast and crew of Cripple shot scenes in the normally sleepy suburb.

The 8200 block of Huntington Road and several streets to the north were lit up bright as day, with service trucks lining the curbs, crew members wearing boots and fur-lined jackets huddling together and curious passersby slowing their cars to peek at the action.

Cripple is based on the life of a local man, Adam Niskar, who became a quadriplegic after a diving accident in 1999, said second assistant director Jasmine Marie Alhambra. At the outset of the movie, Niskar is a rising corporate star who has finally met the right girl. But, his life changes in a heartbeat when he leaps into a lake whose depth he miscalculated. The film follows Niskar's journey as he adjusts to his new life after losing the use of his limbs, Alhambra said.

His brother, executive producer Dan Gilbert of Quicken Loans, is helping to fund the film, Alhambra said. News reports indicate Niskar has worked for Quicken Loans.

No release date has been set, Alhambra said.
