'Drummer Boy' Sounds the Beat of War

Learn more about the artwork on display through September outside M3 Investments in Berkley as part of the Detroit Institute of Arts' annual Inside|Out program.

A reproduction of "Drummer Boy" by Thomas Couture is on display through September outside M3 Investments.

It is one of five artworks from the Detroit Institute of Arts on display this summer throughout Berkley as part of the fourth annual Inside|Out program.

"It looks like this boy is just playing around, making music. But the artist includes a rifle nearby, which tells us that the youngster was a drummer for the military in the 1800s," says the DIA of this oil on canvas painted in 1857. "In France, orphans or sons of soldiers were often drummers, beating time for marching troops and even communicating orders on the battlefield."
