Viewfinder: Icicles, Icicles Everywhere

Berkley, Huntington Woods have been transformed into a winter wonderland.

This winter's freeze-and-thaw cycle has left incredible icicles dangling from homes throughout Berkley and Huntington Woods.

While the crystalline forms create a fairytale feeling, they also mean another chore for homeowners.

Cleaning out the gutters and adding insulation can help prevent icicles, general manager Chip Gibbs said. For a quick fix, he suggested tossing ice-melting tablets or panty hose filled with calcium chloride melter onto the roof.

Luckily, Mother Nature will help melt the ice this weekend, with a high of 38 degrees Sunday after this week's frigid temperatures.

Take heart if your home is sporting these wintry accessories: A drive through our neighborhoods reveals they are a common – and beautiful – problem. In fact, yours truly's house is among those pictured. If your abode has a whopper of an icicle, e-mail a photo of it to Leslie.Ellis@patch.com and we'll add it to the gallery.
