Video: Woodward Dream Cruise Sights and Sounds

Classic car enthusiasts lined the historic avenue Saturday – until a severe late-afternoon thunderstorm broke up the party early.

Mother Nature may have rained on the Woodward Dream Cruise on Saturday afternoon, but that didn't stop car buffs from having a blast along the historic corridor.

The action kicked off even before the 17th annual event's official 9 a.m. start as people staked out spots for their chairs along Woodward Avenue and helicopters hovered in the sky.

"I got here about 6:30 this morning, set up the tent, started to cook breakfast around 7 o'clock," Glenn Evan of Livonia said. "It's been an annual tradition for about 16 years here on Woodward at Catalpa (in Berkley).

"I'll be having about 30 or 40 people coming down," he said. "Got people from out of town in, and we're just here on Woodward to have a good time."

Evan and other Cruise fans were not disappointed, as the event drew a variety of vintage and tricked-out rides. Classic Corvettes shared the road with oddities such as a van with three full-size white-tail deer mounted on top or .

Of course, the festivities extended north and south of Berkley and Huntington Woods, from Pontiac to Ferndale, so we provided a live blog to help keep readers up to speed. .

While Saturday started off sunny, the skies turned gray in the afternoon, and – the heart of the Dream Cruise.

"We're doing the shutdown on Woodward (along the entire Dream Cruise route) just like we would at 9 p.m.," due to wires and trees down in Birmingham and Royal Oak, Deputy Director Robert North said shortly before 6 p.m.

Mark and Kacey Jenson of Huntington Woods, who went home when it started to rain, came back later to watch the cruise only to discover it had been called off early.

“Oh, that's a bummer,” Mark Jenson said. “I feel worse for the people who spent their year bringing their cars out here.”
