The City of Huntington Woods will soon have a brighter jewel in its crown as we prepare to break ground on the new Burton Community Park in June of 2014. The new playground will replace the existing twenty-year old structure, creating a space that is ADA compliant, optimized for children on the Autism Spectrum and provides opportunities for the entire community, as well as surrounding communities, to use and benefit from the park.

The Friends of Burton Community Park has been hard at work paving the way for our new playground. We are in the final three months of our capital campaign to raise $440,000. To date, we have raised $174,000 through private donations. We are pursuing grants and public funding, as well. We will be breaking ground on the new playground in June of 2014. Because it is not recommended that we “add on” to the playground at a later date, the size and content will be determined by the funding we have in place as of December 31, 2013.

At this time, we are seeking individuals and businesses to become sponsors of the park. Donors contributing $500 or more will receive permanent recognition on the park donor wall. Larger donations will receive more prominent recognition. Individual elements of the playground can be sponsored, as well, with recognition. Donors wishing to contribute smaller amounts may purchase personalized bricks on the park’s “walk of fame.” All donations are tax-deductible.

We are also excited to announce that we have extended our “Park for Sale” campaign. Individual participants or “team”/ groups can fundraise for a particular park element. The top fundraiser wins $1000, second place $250 and third place $100. Watch for surprise incentives throughout the contest that ends on December 1st. A huge thank you goes out to Stephen and Alice Mendelson who kicked the fundraiser off with a $5,000 donation given in honor of their son Ben. More information on this fundraiser can be found here, http://www.crowdrise.com/ParkForSale2013

The final countdown to construction has begun. All donations and fundraising must be completed by December 31st. We need your help now.
