Modern Woodmen, one of the country’s largest fraternal financial service organizations, donated $2,500 in matching funds to Berkley Instrumental Boosters (BIB) at its first meeting of 2013.

Thomas R. Holmes, a former Berkley resident and financial representative from the Kalamazoo office, presented a check for $5,000, which represented matching funds associated with the BIB annual Fruit & Nut sale.

Berkley residents Kevin and Mary McDaid, (Berkley High School class of ’73 and ’75, respectively) nominated BIB for the donation and helped provide volunteer support.

Citing concern over decreasing funds for music education nationwide, Kevin said, “Music was the place to put money.”

BIB President Gordy Oliva said he couldn’t be more pleased. "We are thrilled that Modern Woodmen approached us to contribute such a sizable donation.  Corporate involvement like this is what will allow for the continued success of our students and our music program,” said Oliva.

During his presentation at the BIB general meeting, Holmes said he is often met with initial disbelief. “Why do we give back to communities? Because we are non-profit. It is my job to give back,” he said.

Modern Woodmen helps its members plan for financial security through insurance, investment and banking products.
