Why go: Check out guitarist/songwriter/comedian and Birmingham native J Chris Newberg, who has appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Comedy Central and America's Got Talent. Jen Murphy will be the opening act.

Zoo MemberFest

When: 6-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Where: Detroit Zoological Park, 8450 W. 10 Mile Rd., Royal Oak

Why go: Members can enjoy the zoo with smaller crowds and see live music, puppet shows, keeper talks and live theater performances.

Free Boater Safety Class

When: 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday

Where: 1200 N. Telegraph Rd., Building 38E, Training Room, Pontiac

Why go: Earn a boater safety certificate during this Oakland County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit class. The certificate is required for anyone who wishes to operate a power boat or personal watercraft.

Cost: Free

Amazing Day at J.C.C.

When: 1-3 p.m. Sunday

Where: Jewish Community Center, 15110 W. Ten Mile Rd., Oak Park

Why go: Have fun with your family and contribute to a good cause during this carnival that will feature games, bounce houses, snacks and more. Attendees are encouraged to bring clothing or housewares to donate to the National Council of Jewish Women Greater Detroit Chapter resale shops such as Council Thrift in Berkley.

Cost: Five tickets for $1 or an arm-length for $5
