Vote Now: Berkley Athlete of the Winter Season
Vote from a list of very deserving candidates on who should be named the Patch Athlete of the Season for Berkley.
Berkley High School had a lot of great performances this season. We want to hear from our readers which one they thought was the best.
Be sure to vote by 9 a.m. Friday, April 13. Final results will be posted on Monday, April 16.
Here are the candidates:
Aarica McCray, senior, basketball: Aarica McCray was nominated twice this season for Patch Athlete of the Week. She won the award for her play during the first week of January. She hit a game-winning layup against Ferndale that week and led her team in scoring in two wins, but that’s what she did all season. The senior was the team’s "go to" player on offense and finished the season as the Bears’ leading scorer.
Stephen Wroe, sophomore, hockey: The Berkley-Ferndale goaltender had a phenomenal year in net. The Bears won 20 of the 23 games Wroe started and his numbers show why. He only allowed 1.44 goals a game, with a save percentage of .941. As a sophomore, he was the only goalie in the Oakland Activities Association to play more than 1,000 minutes. He was honored as part of the Division 1 All-State First team (voted on by the Michigan coaches association) and his coach awarded him team MVP.
Aaron Par-Besemer, sophomore, wrestling: Aaron Par-Besemer was one of three wrestlers from Berkley to reach regionals this season. He finished his sophomore season with a 29-8 record. At districts, Par-Besemer reached the finals in the 112-pound bracket. He brought the Bears home a title in the 112-pound weight class at the OAA Blue/Gold tournament.
Damon Eldridge, senior, basketball: Point guard Damon Eldridge was the floor general for the Berkley boys basketball team this season. He was the Bears’ leading scorer and one of their top defenders.
