Should Snyder Sign Bill Allowing Concealed Weapons in Schools?

On Friday, a gunman killed at least 27 at a school in Newtown, CT. Meanwhile in Michigan, Gov. Rick Snyder has a bill on his desk that would allow some concealed guns in schools. What do you think?

Should Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder sign a bill on is desk that would allow concealed weapons in former no-gun zones, like schools?

The question is timely:

What do you think of the legislation? Should the governor sign it? Leave a comment!

It's only okay for the governor to sign it if the required additional training includes graduating from the police academy. When, exactly, is it ever a good idea to have loaded weapons in an elementary school, or any K-12?

Why should he even sign it? It only allows concealed weapons in the places we should never have them - schools, daycares, concert venues...

I cannot understand why anyone needs a concealed or not concealed weapon in a school or church. I also can't understand why people need assault weapons. It seems that their only use is to assault innocent people.

He should not sign the bills into law; he should impose stricter gun controls in our state. Tragedies like these happen too often; too many people are dying, and I believe it is (in part) due to the prevalence of guns in our society. Too many people have them, and it is becoming far to easy to buy legal guns. We have become a nation of armed novices - most of these people have no idea how to use guns or what the purpose really is - to KILL. Guns and gun violence are major public health problems, and we need stricter gun control in Michigan and throughout the country.

It seemed insane to allow concealed weapons on school campuses before yesterday, now could anyone conceive that this is an important need in our state, let alone world. Gun rights need limits. How is that in any doubt today.

Hi Susan. Somehow, there are still people who think it is okay to walk around with loaded weapons without telling anyone else.... that is what concealed means, right? Makes me sick! I agree with you.

Gun control is NOT abolishing gun ownership or seizure. We need to start the dialogue. I personally see no reason for assault rifles or any sort of automatic weapon except for law enforcement. Perhaps gun owners should have to insure their weapons just like when our children turn 16 whether they are driving or not, and if we own certain types of dogs. Remember, most shootings have been with legally obtained weapons. We need to keep them out of the hands of mentally unstable persons. The gun is NOT the problem. The regulation of who has access and of what type is.

He absolutely should sign this, "gun free zones" are a magnet for these whack jobs to commit these mass killings! How many massacres in no gun zones do we have to have before people get a clue they don't work!!! If citizens on site, teachers and administrators had been armed in this recent tragedy there would of been a Lot less fatalities and possibly none if the attacker knew there would be resistance to start with!

The arguement that it would prevent the horror and evil in CT is false. A gun in a classroom is a liability for a teacher. I teach high school and would be overpowered by students bigger and stronger than me. I am lucky I have a full time police officer in my school. An elementary child could get a hold of it and cause damage and really I do not want a teacher with a gun in my 10 year old's class. We have a sickness in this country. A true sick culture of violence in all areas. Only yesterday in AL a mom and her two children were killed in a domestic dispute with an AK-47 and an officer ended up with critical injuries. A man fired 50 rounds in a mall parking lot etc etc etc. Will this nightmare end? No! Snyder keep guns away from stadiums, schools and churches where it will discharge accidently and kill someone. My friends teach college and 21 year olds are in their classes. They do not want guns in their classes either. Get rid of the semi and automatics which are TRUE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.

Pam, this guy was on a mission to kill. If he had not gained access to a gun it would of been a knife, box cutter, machete, baseball bat, etc.. The Only way to stop a sick individual with a weapon is a sane person with a weapon of equal or greater power. Someone needs to be armed in our schools, be it teachers with the proper training, administrators, police, security personnel, etc.!

Ladies, there seems to be a lot of misinformation about what kinds of guns are being used and the general public own. For starters almost nobody can go out and buy an "automatic" machine gun type weapon, these are highly regulated. Secondly, the "assault" rifles the general public can buy are "semi-automatic" and are not much different than a standard hunting rifle other than the look of them. They look like military rifles but are not fully automatic like a military rifle. If you outlaw "assault rifles", a semi-automatic hunting rifle is just as deadly and will fire just as quickly. Then you have semi-automatic and pump shotguns used for hunting and skeet shooting, do you outlaw them as well because there are capable of tremendous damage as well. The list goes on and on, you just can't outlaw everything. I do believe we need to better educate people of the "care" of firearms, keeping them locked up etc., as well as better screen whom can buy and have access to them.
