Taking what they have been learning in the classroom to the real world, the second graders at Rogers Elementary visited Berkley businesses last week during their fourth annual community walk.

The students, who have been learning about the community in their social studies lessons, were invited by more than 20 local businesses for tours, demonstrations and samples of goods and services.

Many parents accompanied the students as they paraded to various stores and businesses on Coolidge and 12 Mile through downtown Berkley to learn more about the role businesses play in their community.

“It’s an educational experience like no other," Rogers second-grade teacher Jennifer Butka said. "The students, parents and teachers are already talking about where they’re going to visit and shop in the coming days.”

Berkley parent Jen Blake accompanied her son, Evan, and a half-dozen other schoolmates on their walk Tuesday. "We had nine groups that visited nine businesses throughout the day," she said. "This was an opportunity for the kids to learn about Berkley. The past, present and future of our city."

The following businesses hosted the Rogers students:

Clark's Ice Cream & Yogurt
Anytime Fitness
Armadillo Printwear
Berkley Animal Clinic
Berkley Music Co.
Butterfly Bake Shoppe
Berkley Chop Shop
Council Thrift Store
Doll Hospital & Toy Soldier Shop
