Last Chance: Enroll in Avanti Summer MusicFest

The DSO-hosted program still has a few openings and has added some new classes.

There's still some time to sign up for Avanti Summer MusicFest, scheduled for July 16-21 at Birmingham's Derby Middle School.

The six-day intensive camp is open to all young musicians ages 14-18 and is hosted by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO), the Musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (MDSO) and Save Our Symphony (SOS).

During Avanti, students will have the opportunity to train with DSO musicians and then perform on the world-renowned stage at historic Orchestra Hall in Detroit.

Many sections are full, but Avanti is still accepting applications for players of the following instruments: clarinet, bassoon, horn, trombone, tuba, sax and viola.

The Berkley school district is no stranger to quality music programs. Last week, the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation named the Berkley School District a 2012 Best Community for Music Education, recognizing it for its commitment and support for music education as part of the core curriculum.
