Huntington Woods was in second place as of Tuesday in the Recyclebank and SC Johnson Green Choices Recycling Challenge, trailing only the city of Lakes at Red Rock, Va., among 50 communities participating across the United States.

Huntington Woods was the only Michigan city chosen to take part in the national competition and its success hinges on residents' participation.

As part of the challenge, Huntington Woods residents have been asked to register with New York-based recycling incentives program Recyclebank and record their recycling habits for 2 years beginning July 2.

Whichever community among the 50 competitors has the highest percentage of reported recycling participation during the ensuing six months will win a $100,000 grant for sustainability projects from Wisconsin-based household products manufacturer SC Johnson, which has partnered with Recyclebank for the SC Johnson Green Choices Recycling Challenge.

"Huntington Woods is in 2nd place in the $100k @Recyclebank challenge," Tweeted resident Howard Collens on Thursday. "Keep up the good work (and keep reporting your recycling)."

A post on Huntington Woods' recycling Facebook page, "Huntington Woods – The Recyclers," echoed that sentiment July 31.

"We need you to report each time you recycle," the post reads. "Act like a block captain and make sure your friends/neighbors and enemies are signed up and reporting."

A leaderboard is available on the Recyclebank website so residents can track the city's standing in the competition.
