Hogger's BBQ in Berkley Closes
The restaurant was forced to shutter operations after failed negotiations with its landlord, according to an e-mail sent to customers, and plans to reopen in a new location.
Hogger's BBQ in Berkley has closed its doors, but may reopen in a new location.
The 2012 Berkley Patch Readers' Choice award-winner was forced to shutter operations after failed negotiations with its landlord, according to an e-mail sent to customers.
"We have lost our lease after many months of disagreements with our landlord. We really wish we had been able to negotiate with him, however we were unsuccessful," the e-mail stated. "We are currently working negotiations with another building right here in Berkley."
Customer Rich Schneider, who received the e-mail, said Thursday he is sad about the closing, but hopeful Hogger's will reopen.
"It's a great little location (the owner) lost in the city, but maybe the new location will be better," he said.
Hogger's BBQ occupied a space along 12 Mile Road in the heart of downtown Berkley's shopping district.
"We thank each and every one of our customers for their overwhelming support. We will be sending out a new notice once our new location is open," Hogger's' e-mail said. "Please feel free to e-mail us if you have any questions. Have a wonderful rest of the year. Hopefully we will see all of you soon!"
Hogger's BBQ can be reached by e-mail at 2959hoggers@gmail.com.
Stay tuned to Berkley Patch for more information as it becomes available!

Such a bummer! I loved that they were located within walking distance of my house. Maybe they can negotiate a deal to move in to the old, empty Taco Bell.

That is too bad, hopefully they stay in Berkley. They would make a great addition to an exsisting eatery or even the empty place down near Cambridge. Beer and wine license would probably be a great fit as well.

I bypassed Hoggers many times for carry out due to the bank taking up so much of the parking. The more I think of the Taco Bell location, the more I like the idea, especially with the drive thru. If they could get the dinners up a bit quicker, that would not be a bad fit for them.

Take the old Taco Bell or BBC building. I would hope the landlord has another tenant ready to go in, otherwise it's just gonna sit empty

"failed negotiations" usually means "greedy landlord". Hope they reopen in Berkley.

I absolutely understand everyone's reaction! It is a real shame Hogger's had to close, even if it's only temporarily! But, there are always at least two sides to a story – I will try to provide the landlord's point of view as well, if I can reach them.

Taco bell site advantages:
Parking
Space for outdoor seating
Room for a smoker(?)
Right across the street from my office.

BBC building would come with a liquor license, and it's pretty close to your building. Also has outdoor seating, parking, etc.

Seriously??? This is a "Breaking News Alert" as was posted in my subject line from the Berkley Patch. I signed up to receive the Berkley Patch about 2 months ago, so I am somewhat "new" to their news - perhaps this is typical? I am perfectly OK with this being an article, but a breaking news alert??? I expected to read something incredibly important - something truthfully considered a "breaking news alert." On the positive side, I am so happy to hear that everyone is safe, no shooters or robbers are currently running down our streets and we can eat dinner in peace. Good luck to Hogger's BBQ. Never heard of the restaurant, but will happily try out the cuisine at the new location, wherever that may be.

Just a quick note about the Berkley Patch - they are really great at getting local news out as soon as it becomes available. Whether it's "big" news or a small town notice, they are on top of what's going on and a great source to keep connected to your community. You will love getting the breaking news alerts - I promise! :)

Hi C,
The editors are local so when something happens in our community they keep us informed. It's a nice break from, " If it bleeds , it leads".

You live in Berkley and never heard of it? I live in Macomb Twp. And have heard of this jewel. Just saying.

Hi Joy. Crazy, I know - feeling out of the loop here! We have been in HW (immediately south of Berkley) for 5 years and have always gone to "Slows BBQ" in Detroit and love it. Had I known this "Hogger's BBQ" was right here, we would have tried it much sooner. Hopefully they will get a new location and we can enjoy what they serve.

Hogger's is awesome and I certainly hope that they wind back up in Berkley in another location. I would hate to lose them completely from our community. They are very generous and they help give our community a nice hometown feel!

Shame on that landlord, and well there may be 2 sides to the story so this guy should fess up on his greed and not helping an award winning business! So good luck Leslie Ellis!
And to Hogger's owners...I'm glad you won't be pushed around and will find a better place to make your home...you guys rock!

And may I add....this is the same building that lost Muddy Waters a handfull of years back! The best coffee shop ever and really brought Berkley up a notch too....So would this be the same owner that has now bumped Hogger's??? That's the question, Leslie, that you should investigate!!!There may be way more to this story!

This was our favorite restaurant in Berkley. Really good food, great service, reasonable prices. Hoggers I hope you come back and hope you are still within walking distance as often met fellow Berkley residents there for dinner. You did so much for our community. I too hope the landlord made their best effort after all the negotiation. So sad to see a great business leave its location when there is still much open real estate on Coolidge and 12 Mile roads.

Hi TS and LM. I have really enjoyed the hometown feel of the Patch. Hearing from friends that it was that type of news outlet, was the exact reason I signed up for it, along with hopes of avoiding the entire "if it bleeds, it leads" drama we get too much of these days. I am 100% on board with an article such as this one being front page news or even the lead article. But I did think putting "Breaking New Alert" in the subject line of my inbox for this type of article was tabloidesque, which is the last thing the Patch needs to be. I guess I would like that phrase to be saved for something that should immediately stop me from what I am doing to find out what is seriously happening (i.e. the recent bank robbery on Woodward). No sooner I drove by cop cars at the bank and found an update on the Patch as to what was potentially going on there. That's what I call service! For the record - will still continue reading, enjoying and appreciating the Patch, just hoping that in the future they use a little discretion with the phrase "BNA."

Muddy Waters.., Nippon Grille.., now Hoggers. It's a bad luck building for a restaurant, I guess. Very sad, Hogger's is such a good fit, owned and operated by Berkley folks. Wonderful BBQ, so we'll wait and hope that one of the empty buildings on Coolidge can host this gem. Wherever you go, Jane, we'll be there!!!!!!

Too bad for the landlord. Berkley has many vacant storefronts and Hogger's has many fans. I'm sure they'll be back soon with a better location.
