Big Pickles Deli Will No Longer Open

After sufficient payments were not received to rent the former Taco Bell space in Berkley, the city placed it back on the market, City Planner Amy Vansen said.

After months of excitement swirling around the neon-colored space on Coolidge Highway expected to be Big Pickles Deli, it’s confirmed that it will not open.

“According to the property owner, they did not start paying rent,” Berkley City Planner Amy Vansen said. “So, we’re releasing the property.”

Patch first reported on the plans for the hyper-local and price-friendly deli, complete with a patio and array of kosher meats, back in January when Vansen said the permit was applied for.

At that time, owner Ahmad Amin said the doors would be open by spring.

While the property was just leased again recently, Vansen said the city had been waiting for payments for a while.

“In January, they applied for the permit and we started having problems with payments not being sufficient. We waited to see and finally when nothing was going, we sent a letter.”

Last month, Esther Leibowitz – owner of Star Bakeries in Oak Park, which was supposed to supply the fresh bread – said no orders had been placed and she hadn’t been in contact with Amin.

Leibowitz nor Amin could be reached for comment. As of now, the commercial space at 2375 Coolidge Hwy. is back on the market.

Yes, I was hoping for a decent deli...maybe Onion Roll could open a second location.

Bummer. Still holding out hope that a decent coffee place will open somewhere on Coolidge between 11 and 12.

Now that one mystery is solved, we need to move on to the next one: What the heck's going on with the former Sam's Market on 11 Mile in Huntington Woods?

Jessica, I'm counting on your sleuthing skills!

The real tragedy is those awful colors they painted the building!

I agree Angela but the owner let his kid pick the colors.
