Bicycle Season: Paths, Trends and Tips for Get Started

Berkley offers a map of a bicycle path around the city.

With the unseasonably warm weather and costly gas prices this year, it makes the perfect equation for bike riding.

Courtney Whitinger, who does sales and bike servicing at Berkley’s shop, says bicycling is rising in popularity around the area — both out of need and intrigue.

“We’re definitely getting more commuters, with people riding to work, especially with the gas prices,” he said. “Here we’ve been getting more recreational riders, too. A lot more families are coming in now, with moms and dads looking to go out with the kids.”

In response to the rising number of riders, the  recently released a map of a suggested bicycle path around the community.

Finding the right fit

For communities like Berkley and Huntington Woods, Whitinger said the hybrid bikes have really struck a chord.

Hybrid bikes draw out the best features of a road bike and mountain bike. They have a more upright frame for a comfortable and more casual riding position, stouter frames that can handle more weight and cargo, with wider tires for more stability – all characteristics of a mountain bike. However, it has the added features of lighter rims for faster riding and an overall less-bulky feel, like a road bike.

“There’s not many hills in Berkley, so a one-speed bike will get you around just fine,” Whitinger added.

In addition to the hybrids, the beach cruiser style bikes offer a traditional look and come in a variety of fun colors, he said, which makes them popular with customers. They are also practical for many riders because they don’t have all the different speeds and gears that many bike “strollers” might find difficult.

“They are very easy for people.”

Beginning your bicycle season

For people who are breaking out their bicycles for the first time this season, Whitinger reminds them to check the tires.

“The first thing I tell people is to inflate the tires. If it’s been in storage, the tires will likely go flat because they naturally lose air.”

For anyone eager to try out bike riding this summer, or to buy a new bike, Whitinger said the first step is to really decide what you’ll use it for most: Commuting or recreational riding with the family? A bike to take off-road? There are multiple categories for bikes and he said it’s the most important decision.

Safely cycling around the city

The recently released a map of the bicycle path around the community. The route starts on Kipling at 11 Mile, goes as far east as Mortenson Boulevard, as far north as Edwards Avenue, and as far west as Bacon Avenue. There’s also a trail the runs through the middle of the square-shaped path, leading riders across Wiltshire Road, back to Kipling.

The city also has helpful information for riders, including proper dress and how to navigate alongside of traffic. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Dress for the Ride

  • Wear a hard shell helmet.
  • Wear bright-colored clothes at night; they are easier to see.
  • Wear ankle clips or elastic bands around your pant cuffs so they don't get caught in the chain.
  • Put reflectorized tape on your clothes at night.
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands in case you fall.
  • Wear shoes that tie or fasten so they don't fall off.

Rules of the Road

  • Drive on the right side of the road, in the direction of traffic.
  • Obey all traffic lights and signals
  • Start using hand signals about 100 feet from where you’ll stop or turn.
  • Never hitch a ride on moving vehicles.
  • Don’t carry passengers.
  • Don’t weave in and out of traffic.
  • Pass cars only on the left where the driver can see you.
